The Americans

Watched the Americans last night

First episode in a new series.

Haven’t watched it in a decade or so

But it hasn’t changed much,

Just got older.

The spy had to check up

On the other spy who knew too much,

And was about to exchange

What he knew

For information from another spy

Who was probably a double agent spy.

Clandestine meeting in Mexico.

Hockey game, knife in the neck.

A little gratuitous bit of nudity, but what the heck.

But.

What struck me and left me open-mouthed..

The information the Russian spy had

Was about ‘deadhand’.

(Look it up)

It did exist.        

And probably still does.

It’s about mutually assured nuclear destruction:

If one side presses the button:

An automatic, computer controlled

Response would be made in haste.

Annihilation and the Earth a barren waste.

Simply because of the combined stupidity of the human race.

Oh dear.

How can this ever be possible?

I am aghast and saddened that we have come this far.

I know that I will be forgotten dust in a while

But I like to think that there will always be people like me

Struggling with rhymes, with something to say

Still writing...

But hey... maybe not.
